Catherine Ward Bishir was born in 1942 in Lexington, Ky., daughter of Margaret Norris Byrn Ward (1912-1993), a home economics teacher, and William Smith Ward (1907-1994), a professor of English at the University of Kentucky. She received her B.A. from the University of Kentucky in 1964 and her M.A. from Duke University in 1965.
